Work-Study Programs at the University of Victoria
By Ramona Hamilton Cook
Want to work in Canada, develop your English and improve your resume at the same time? The University of Victoria’s English Language Centre offers a variety of co-op work programs for English language students in Canada’s most beautiful city.
These programs are designed for students wishing to work and study abroad to develop strong English skills while adding valuable experience to their resumes. The ELC’s Work Programs Coordinator caters to the individual needs of students by matching them with employers that suit their skills and interests. Each student is given personal attention during job preparation workshops which build resumes, cover letters and interview skills, all to ensure success in the Canadian job market.
The demand for quality work-study programs is higher than ever, and over the past several years the ELC has created a variety of program options to suit the needs, goals and budgets of international students, such as:
• The English Work Experience Program, which combines a 12-week Intensive English program with a 6-week work term
• The Canadian Experience Internship Program, which combines 6 months of intensive English and 6 months of paid work
• Job Preparation Workshops, which offer a series of job preparation sessions to help students get ready to work in Victoria.
By combining English instruction, job preparation workshops and work experience, you can broaden your future careers options, improve language skills and become part of Canadian culture in a unique and unforgettable way!
Here’s what former student Aram Lee says about the program:
“This work experience program was the best memorable experience in Canada. First of all, I have my own resume and cover letter now. Second, I have job interview experience in English. Third, I met many people who rely on me, so I feel responsible for my tasks. Fourth, through this work experience, I could improve my English speaking, listening and writing skills. At last, I realized that I’m more valuable than I thought!”
